1995: "Transgender" added to SF Pride Official Name

Originally the "Gay Freedom Day" parade in 1973, then the "Lesbian & Gay Freedom Day" parade in 1980, the official name of San Francisco Pride has been the "San Francisco Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Pride Celebration Committee" since 1995, when Bisexual and Transgender were added.

A notice in the newspaper advertised a community discussion of the name change in January 1994.

The acronym LGBT had been gaining favor for a few years as community members advocated for broader representation and inclusion and SF Pride was one of the first to formally enshrine it. Not without some controversy, the BAR editorialized that the name was 'somewhat ponderous'.

The theme for the 1995 LGBT Parade was "A World Without Borders", a reflection of the global nature of the struggle for LGBT equality.
