San Francisco LGBT Pride Celebration Committee Taking Applications for 2008 Community Grant Program
Over $1.2 Million Granted Since 1997
San Francisco, CA 21 February 2008 Applications for the San Francisco LGBT Pride Celebration Committee's (SFLGBTPCC) grant-giving Community Partners Program are now being accepted for the 2008 event, the Pride Committee announced today. Not-for-Profit organizations from the nine counties of the Bay Area are invited to apply. Applications are available online on the Pride website at www.sfpride.org.
The Pride Celebration Committee provides grants to community organizations in exchange for volunteers the weekend of the event; grant amounts are calculated on the basis of the amount of volunteer hours the organization worked.
In 2007, over $178,000 was given out to 66 different non-profit organizations throughout the nine-counties of the Bay Area. Now in its eleventh year, the San Francisco Pride Celebration Committee has granted over $1.2 million dollars since the program's inception in 1997.
These financial grants have helped in numerous ways:
- LGBT sports organizations to compete in regional, national, and international events such as the Gay Games and the National Gay Softball World Series
- Fund organizations that supply veterinary services and food to pets supporting people with HIV/AIDS
- Provide LGBT seniors with free luncheons
- Keep HIV/AIDS-based organizations from stopping or interrupting service due to cuts in federal funding
- Provide funding for drop-in groups for LGBT elders with HIV/AIDS
- Finance documentaries about immigration issues
- Support Deaf advocacy organizations
- Support breast cancer organizations in their work to educate the public and to take policy steps to protect women from environmental toxins linked to cancer
Mikayla Connell, Board President,
"Over the course of a decade, it is sometimes difficult to measure the number of people whose lives are touched by a decade of a program like San Francisco Pride's Community Partners Program. To wrap one's mind around the tens of thousands of people over the past decade who were able to access medical services, food, and education or who were able to participate in a community group or take part in creating a grant-supported work of art is daunting. It nonetheless speaks to the importance of a concerted and diligent effort to support our communities and to nurture the very fabric that makes a community vibrantthat allows it to truly flourish."
The Community Partner program is open to any not-for-profit organization whose mission involves service to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities, people living with HIV, AIDS, or breast cancer, or positive outreach/education to the general public about those issues.
All interested organizations can find more information on our website, www.sfpride.org or call the Pride office at 415-864-0831.
The deadline to turn in an application and all associated paperwork is Monday, March 17, 2008.
