Access All Areas
For the first time ever, deaf and hard of hearing Pride visitors will have their own gathering area, a safe space for uninterrupted conversations in American Sign Language (ASL). This year will also bring expanded access to Pride Celebration performances, with several stages and venues offering interpreters for the deaf and hard of hearing. Additionally, an ASL interpreter will be available at the Pride Information Center for guests needing directions or other information, and all organizations working the beverage concessions will receive training on how to communicate effectively with deaf and hard of hearing patrons.
Todd Higgins, Outreach Specialist for DGLC, remarked:
"We're thrilled to be working so closely with the Pride Committee this year, and it has really paid off. Working together with many, many people in the local deaf and hard of hearing LGBT community, we're building on what has been done before, and the results are fabulous. Not only will our community enjoy greater access than ever at Pride 2003, but I think we've also developed a model partnership that other cities can benefit from in the future."
Sign language interpreters will be stationed at the bleacher seating area along the Parade route; on the Main, Nectar, Latin, Asian & Pacific Islander, and Soul of Pride stages; and, at the Writers' Village in the Celebration area.
Pride 2003 supports many grassroots community organizations, including DGLC, in part through optional donations received at the entrance gates to the Celebration Area. A $3 donation (more if you can, less if you can't) is encouraged, and will help support the important work of DGLC and other good causes in the Bay Area.
Tickets to the accessible seating area are available at no charge, although a donation up to $30 per ticket is encouraged from those who can afford to do so and all proceeds will benefit DGLC. Tickets may be picked up at the DGLC office, located on the fourth floor of the SF LGBT Community Center, Tuesday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. or at DCARA's Deaf Store, 1550 San Leandro Blvd., San Leandro, Monday-Thursday, 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. and Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
This year is the 33rd anniversary of the San Francisco Pride Parade and Celebration. The event theme is "You've Gotta Give Them Hope." The quote comes from Harvey Milk, the City's first openly gay elected official who was gunned down in City Hall 25 years ago, and is the answer he gave when frequently asked why he was an activist. The event is to be held over the June 28/29 weekend. For more information about the history of San Francisco Pride, please visit our website at: www.sfpride.org/heritage
