Who Gives YOU Hope?
Nominations are now officially open for the Grand Marshals of this year's San Francisco Pride Parade. With new changes, instituted for the future, the Grand Marshal selection process promises to be fairer and remain true to its purpose of honoring those who have made significant contributions to the LGBT community.
SF Pride President, Joey Cain, said:
"This is the time for us to acknowledge and honor those that carry on the legacy of Harvey Milk, those that challenge us and give us hope."
This year, the public will make three nominations: for the organization Grand Marshal, an individual Grand Marshal and the Pink Brick, an anti-award symbolizing the first brick thrown at the Stonewall Riots in New York. The General Members of SF Pride and an electoral college of former Grand and Honorary Marshals will each choose an individual Grand Marshal. The Pride Committee may elect up to three more individual Grand Marshals, depending upon the selections made by the public, to ensure that the Grand Marshals are a diverse and representative body, chosen for their activity and involvement within the queer community.
Of the changes, Pride Executive Director, Teddy Witherington, said:
"Pride reviews all of its policies periodically and, with this revision, looked at the experiences over the past three years. The revisions provide a fairer way of ensuring that the honor of being Grand Marshal is reflected in the choices made."
