Sir Ian McKellen To Head Parade
Sir Ian McKellen Accepts Invitation To Be Celebrity Grand Marshal

Sir Ian McKellen will head this year’s San Francisco LGBT Pride Parade as Celebrity Grand Marshal. Ian came out publicly as a gay man in 1988 when he joined the Arts Lobby against Section 28, a law forbidding city and county governments from “promoting homosexuality” in the UK. Sir Ian’s coming out has a very special connection with San Francisco: "San Francisco is where I decided to come out in 1988 - it's high time I came back to thank everyone!" he says.

SF Pride President, Joshua Smith, said:

“Sir Ian’s life-story is synonymous with our theme; Be Yourself, Change The World. We’re thrilled he will be joining us on June 30th.  ”

Ian McKellen is the leading British actor of his generation and an inspirational activist for LGBT communities around the World. His Shakespeare performances on stage and screen are legendary. His versatility and pre-eminence in modern work as well as the classics have earned him over 40 important awards in the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States. His performance as the gay film director, James Whale, won an Academy Award® nomination as Best Actor. His portrayal of the wizard Gandalf in Peter Jackson's Fellowship Of The Ring has received accolades from audiences and critics around the world.

SF Pride Executive Director, Teddy Witherington, added:

“I’ve known Ian for over ten years now and have witnessed, first hand, his dedication, often away from the limelight, to the causes that affect us all. He is, truly, a global hero and the perfect choice for Celebrity Grand Marshal.”
