New Pride President Has Global Focus
The Board of the San Francisco Pride Committee have elected Joshua Maximillian Smith as President for the forthcoming year. Joshua brings with him a wealth of experience gained on the Board of SF Pride, as well as with other region-wide and international organizations. Joshuas experience synchronizes with the choice of the theme for the 2002 Pride Event, Be Yourself, Change The World. Joshuas own journey has resulted in his becoming a mover and shaker on a global level.
Commenting on the task ahead, Joshua said:
Ive always lead my life as me. Now, in this role, Im ready to play my part in what we all do so well in San Francisco, which is change the World.
Joshua joined the Board of SF Pride on January 9, 1994. During his Board tenure, Joshua has spent time both as Secretary and Vice-President. His eight years of experience gained locally is augmented by three years spent as Secretary of the regional pride network and two years as Secretary of InterPride (the International Pride organization), which latter position he currently still holds.
Joshua is 29 years old and is the youngest person to hold the office of President in over 10 years. He is also a keen party animal and has been instrumental in organizing the dance venue at the annual celebration. His party instincts are balanced by his activism in organized labor.
Commenting, Pride Executive Director, Teddy Witherington, said:
We have been blessed to have a succession of excellent presidents for the organization. Each has brought their passion and maturity to the community as a whole. Josh follows in that tradition. adding, I am thrilled that both Calvin Gipson (President 1998 2000) and Cecilia remain on the Board.
Outgoing President, Cecilia Chung, decided not to seek re-election and gave Joshua her whole-hearted support, seconding his nomination.
SF LGBT Pride 2002 takes place over the weekend of June 29 and 30, 2002.
