SF Pride Security and Safety for the 2013 Event

Earl Plante

SF Pride CEO Earl Plante

Our hearts and condolences go out to all those impacted by the senseless bombing tragedy in Boston. Safety and security of our attendees is our number one priority and we take these modern-day threat challenges very seriously. With the impending Supreme Court decisions regarding marriage equality, we are anticipating larger numbers at this year’s parade and celebration. In anticipation of this occurrence, we are implementing key changes with an expanded security presence in addition to an enhanced medical team and protocols overall.

Collectively, SF Pride believes these strategic investments are now an industry-wide best practice and are essential to produce an event of our size and scale. Rest assured that we are doing our due diligence in this arena; however, we cannot go into our specific plans, as we would not want to alert those who might want to hurt our attendees.

SF Pride will always be committed to warning of any credible, specific, and impending threats overall. But, we also recognize that Americans ALL share responsibility for the nation’s security, and we should always be aware of the heightened risk of terrorist attacks; therefore, we all have a collective stake to act in a catastrophic situation, in short “If You See Something, Say Something™.

Although I don’t minimize the importance of security to a certain degree, I am disappointed to know that the Pride is endorsing the U.S. government’s “…..the heightened risk of terrorist attacks” tone. Is the Pride supporting the idea of placing more surveillance cameras on the Market street so that the authority can take away the rights of our gay brothers/sisters with dark skin or “Middle Eastern looks”?
We don’t even know half the Boston bombing story yet and they’re not even reading the suspect his Miranda rights. Outrageous! If anything, the Pride should be talking about protecting our community from becoming a police state.

Williams proclaimed that “Manning will not be a grand marshal in this year’s San Francisco Pride celebration” and termed his selection “a mistake”. She blamed it all on a “staff person” who prematurely made the announcement based on a preliminary vote, and she assures us all that the culprit “has been disciplined”: disciplined. She then accuses Manning of “actions which placed in harms way the lives of our men and women in uniform”: a substance-free falsehood originally spread by top US military officials which has since been decisively and extensively debunked, even by some government officials (indeed, it’s the US government itself, not Manning, that is guilty of “actions which placed in harms way the lives of our men and women in uniform”). And then, in my favorite part of her statement, Williams decreed to all organization members that “even the hint of support” for Manning’s action – even the hint – “will not be tolerated by the leadership of San Francisco Pride”. Will not be tolerated.

You don’t speak for the gay community. It’s time to organize an alternative SF gay parade. Shame. Shame. Shame.

    Did everybody read this?

This is so disgusting and does not mirror the spirit of gay pride. The Pride must be boycotted until Lisa L Williams resigns. Stop telling lies and support cowardice and political corruption. You are not worthwhile to be called LGBT rights supporter. Shame on you. This will be published as long as Lisa L Williams doesn’t apologize.

  5. Seth Newmeyer says:

    OH RLLY???
As long as they’re on Team America, they are victims to be mourned, but if they are civilians in Iraq/Afghanistan, we should do our best to facilitate Amerikkka’s genocidal war machine. RIGHT? Because shame on Bradley Manning for exposing the terror we have used to murder well over a hundred thousand Iraqi civilians, but we should embrace martial law when chasing down a couple kids who might happen to be Muslim (according to my nomination for Pride and Army Marshal, Lisa Williams).
One should note that Bradley Manning was tortured for three years without a trial for allegedly leaking info on our war crimes, and that’s what we chose to prosecute and villify, rather than the war crimes themselves.
We murdered 31 civilians in Afghanistan on the same day 3 died in the Boston bombing, because our military intentionally bombed a wedding, but that’s ok because white, privileged, imperial lives just matter more, RIGHT?
Y’all are fascists that should get your head checked. You do realize you’re the excuse the Democrats have had to move farther right than even Republicans ever have before, don’t you? If they can say they’re friendly to your institutionalized interests (register more monogamous privileged cis gays for marriage), they can pinkwash all their crimes you’re apparently ready and willing to be complicit in.

  6. David Israels says:

Shame on the SF Prides Nazi-like leader Lisa L Williams. http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2013/apr/27/bradley-manning-sf-gay-pride

  7. Frank in Paris says:

Where is Bradley Manning? Morals and “Gay Pride” are now unconnected? Sucking up to authority is what you do best now?

  8. Patrick Monk.RN. says:

    WELCOME BRADLEY MANNING.
Following Harvey’s noble example in the struggle to keep us all free and safe from Federal and Corporate tyranny, without regard for personal risk and sacrifice.
STAND UP – SPEAK UP – ACT UP.

  9. Borderhacker says:

Yes, if you see something, say something! Unless your name is Bradley Manning and what you see is war crimes. No grand marshal for you, Bradley! You’ve been a naughty little whistleblower, and SF Pride is very disappointed in you.

  10. Jeff Wallace says:

Let our pride be our strongest defense!

  11. Randy says:

Our LGBT parade in Long Beach had portable video security units placed along the parade route. Sad to see this is now a necessary evil.
