SAN FRANCISCO, CA — With it’s 43rd annual Pride Celebration and Parade festivities in full swing a few days after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled to dispose of Proposition 8 and DOMA allowing for the recommencement of same sex marriages, San Francisco Pride will host newlywed couples at it’s VIP Party at City Hall on Sunday afternoon.
“We are ecstatic at the restoration of marriage equality in California, beginning here at City Hall,” says Earl Plante, CEO of San Francisco Pride. “We are pleased to invite those couples with marriage certificates issued on Sunday to join the VIP Party at City Hall. While this is an annual event, we want to extend it into something of a ‘wedding reception’ for couples married on this epic Pride celebration day.”
On Thursday, the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday lifted its stay on an injunction which ordered state officials to stop enforcing Proposition 8. With the court’s action, counties can now begin issuing same-sex marriage licenses. California State Attorney General Kamala Harris later that afternoon officiated over the wedding of Proposition 8 plaintiff’s Kris Perry and Sandy Stier at San Francisco City Hall, a Berkeley couple who were two of the four plaintiffs in the Supreme Court case decided this week.
The Assessors Office at San Francisco City Hall will be open Sunday, June 30 from 9am-5pm to issue marriage licenses. Starting at 2pm, newly married couples in San Francisco can present their new marriage license to Pride officials to gain entry to the VIP Party and celebrate their nuptials. Entry into City Hall will be allowed at the Van Ness Avenue main entry way. Directions to the annual party will be provided on site to the 2,500 ticket holders and newly married couples.
“Along with our event sponsors, SF Pride gladly welcomes the newly married couples to this special event made more special by their marriages at City Hall on this most historic occasion,” remarks Lisa Williams, President of SF Pride.
