With the public vote now counted and verified, SF Pride is delighted to announce that the LGBTQ and ally communities have chosen, overwhelmingly, Jewlyes Gutierrez for their 2014 SF Pride Community Grand Marshal. Garnering 54% of the votes cast, the Hercules teen edged out in front of a close field of worthy competitors, in the final polling days.
At age four Jewlyes identified as female, and came out to her family when she was 14-years old. The now 16-year-old transgender teen allegedly suffered peer bullying at school, which was reported to the Vice Principal, but still continued for two years. Finally, she fought back. Even though it was apparent from cell phone captures that she was merely defending herself, the Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office pressed assault and battery charges against Gutierrez. Her attackers were suspended from school, but not similarly charged. Her case is still pending.
Trans March, with 22% of the total public vote, is the 2014 SF Pride Organizational Grand Marshal. The San Francisco Trans March is the City’s largest transgender Pride event and one of the largest trans events in the entire world. It is always the Friday of Pride weekend and thousands of people attend. For more information on Trans March contact Tracy Garza via email@example.com.
While initially a close race, in the end, Scott Lively took the faux honor of the Pink Brick Award with almost 36% of the vote. An extremist anti-gay U.S. pastor, Lively is accused of engineering the Uganda ‘Kill The Gays’ bill. He allegedly said LGBT people are the ‘new Nazis’ and recommended Russia’s ‘gay propaganda’ laws. The Pink Brick Award is given to a recipient who has done great harm to the LGBTQ communities.
SF Pride would like to thank all the nominees that participated in the 2014 SF Pride Grand Marshal race, and acknowledge everyone for their stellar contributions to the LGBTQ and ally communities.
